the exchange program in that university was OK, but the fact, I was in Macau, where there are low cost flight, it makes easier and much less to travel through the south east asia.

Save a lot of money.
Reserve an open/flexible ticket.
Go to Tibet!!!!!!
Go to Vietnam!!!!!
Go to Laos!!!!
Go to Thailand!!!
Etc.
And try to learn some Cantonees or at least some Manderin, this will help you traveling around in China.

Try to travel a bit, especially to the mainland China, which is very different from Macau or Hong Kong. Hong Kong is definitely also worth a visit. very impressive.
Be patient when you come to this country and open for new things!
